Case celebrated production of its 250,000th skid steer loader on June 17. Case has been among the world’s leading skid steer manufacturers since launching its skid steer line in 1969.

In a ceremony at its global skid steer manufacturing facility in Wichita, Kan., Case presented the 250,000th skid steer to its new owner, Dino Folino of A. Folino Construction, a paving contractor from Oakmont, Penn. The new Case 430 skid steer is Folino’s fourth in a fleet of equipment that includes nine Case machines.

Case began producing skid steers in 1969 with the 1530 Uni-Loader model, and has been innovating ever since with Case-exclusive features like Ride Control and side lighting. Last year, Case marked its 40th anniversary of manufacturing skid steers with Case Rockin’ Block Parties (especially themed dealer open houses) at Case dealerships across North America.

“In 2000, we manufactured our 100,000th skid steer. Then, just 10 years later, we more than doubled our sales,” said Curtis Goettel, skid steer marketing manager. “Today’s achievement testifies that customers around the world prefer Case skid steers. You’ll find Case skid steers digging, hauling, pushing and loading material on jobsites in more than 150 countries around the globe.”

A. Folino Construction is a major paving contractor in the Pittsburgh area. The company was founded by Dino’s father, Anthony, in 1972 and operates a large equipment fleet, including Case wheel loaders, excavators, loader/backhoes and skid steers for a total of nine products, including the new skid steer.

Case Construction Equipment Marks 40 Years Making Skid Steers

Case Construction Equipment is celebrating 40 years of manufacturing skid steer loaders. The company began producing skid steers under the Case name in 1969 after acquiring the Uni-Loader line from Universal Industries.

According to Case, in addition to the 40th anniversary milestone, Case is on track to hit another significant milestone in 2009. “Before the end of the year, Case will produce its 250,000th skid steer,” said Jim Hughes, Case brand marketing manager.

For 40 years, construction contractors, landscapers, farmers and others have recognized the value of multi-attachment machines. “In terms of size, performance, productivity, serviceability, operator comfort and control, hydraulics and lift capacity, Case has always pushed the envelope with its skid steer line,” Hughes said. “From the original Case 1530 Uniloader skid steer, to the 1800 Series, the XT Series and the new 400 Series 3, you can track the evolution of features that have put Case skid steers in a class of their own.”

Hughes noted that customers operating current-model Case skid steers will still find the trademark maneuverability that allows the machines to counter rotate. “But today’s Case skid steers include operator comforts – suspension seats, heated and air conditioned cabs, radios with an MP3 port – and productivity features like pilot controls, hydraulic couplers and high flow hydraulics that operators in 1969 couldn’t even begin to imagine,” Hughes said.

Case 400 Series 3 skid steers feature radial- and vertical-lift configurations for greater versatility, redesigned cabs offering more room and better visibility, and superior serviceability for increased uptime. To further boost production on job sites, more than 75 compatible attachments are available for Case skid steers.

Among other features, Case 400 Series 3 skid steers are available with temperature-controlled cabs, hydraulic quick couplers that can be used for the quick exchange of attachments, and Ride Control for maximum load retention and more comfortable operation.

The CNH manufacturing plant in Wichita, Kan., will produce and ship more than 3,000 skid steers and compact track loaders. The long-term contract calls for as many as 1,900 skid steers and nearly 1,500 compact track loaders. The project is a boon to the Wichita plant and the local economy, with production likely to continue through at least 2017.

“Case earned this award based on our ability to satisfy all key TACOM criteria,” said Pat Hunt, director, Strategic Accounts, Case Construction Equipment.

“This includes the ability to support the vehicles with parts and technical services globally, the technical performance and reliability of our machines, and our past performance in supporting other military contracts,” Hunt continued. “In all these areas, Case was evaluated as ‘Excellent,’ and Case skid steers and compact track loaders were deemed to provide the best overall value to the military.”

Hunt and other Case executives participated along with TACOM officers in ceremonies today celebrating both this new project and the company’s more than 150-year history of supporting the U.S. Military.

Meeting Special Military Requirements
Each M400W skid steer loader and M400T compact track loader built under the TACOM contract will be shipped with a full complement of attachments — including an auger with fittings for two sizes, a 4-in-1 multi-purpose bucket, pallet forks and a hydraulic hammer with multiple attachments.

The M400W and M400T are equivalent in size and general specifications to the civilian model 420 Series 3 skid steer loader and 420CT Series 3 compact track loader, respectively.

However, to fulfill the Army’s special requirements, the new machines also include:

- Four tie-down and lift points to meet requirements for various means of transport, including lifting by helicopter and air-dropping by parachute

- A weapons rack

- 24-volt starting and charging system, providing the ability to power auxiliary equipment

- Removable steel crawler tracks for the skid steer

- A fuel injection pump that enables the machines to use JP-8 military-blend jet fuel

- A military-spec NATO slave cable receptacle that allows the machines to provide an electric jump-start to any other military vehicle

The skid steer and compact track loader project is among several recent contract awards to Case from the U.S. military, totaling more than 5,000 machines.

For example, in 2008, Case began fielding armored and armor-ready backhoe loaders under a contract with the U.S. Army to build nearly 700 units. Some of these machines have been deployed to support the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and Iraq. Production of these units at the Case plant in Burlington, Iowa, is scheduled for completion in May.

New EPA Regulations Will Reduce Emissions by 90 Percent
Case Construction Equipment announced its plans to meet the next two phases of emissions requirements. Ultimately, compliance with Tier 4 final standards will result in a 90-percent reduction in particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, compared to Tier 3.
Tier 4 interim standards begin in 2011, and Tier 4 final standards take effect beginning in 2014. In February, Case announced using two distinct technologies, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), to address Tier 4 interim standards across its product line, which includes more than 90 equipment models.
The challenge in meeting Tier 4 standards is the simultaneous reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) levels. If the engine is tuned for maximum efficiency and performance, the high combustion temperatures reduce PM levels but increase NOx levels. In order to meet the ultimate goal of near-zero emissions with an SCR solution, these high NOx levels are reduced in the exhaust system with a diesel exhaust fluid additive, AdBlue®, combined with an SCR catalyst. . On the other hand, in engines that are tuned to reduce the NOx at source with CEGR technology, the combustion temperature is lower, which reduces the NOx created by the engine but increases PM, and an after-treatment exhaust filter system must be part of the solution.

Benefits of SCR and CEGR
SCR is a cool-running, quiet system that’s separate from the main engine function and does not compromise horsepower or torque. It does not interfere with engine performance and, in fact, allows the engine to do what it does best—generate power. The SCR after-treatment system requires the addition of AdBlue, a diesel exhaust fluid.
CEGR technology provides a user-friendly solution that requires no change in the operation of the machines. It is a system that relies on an exhaust filter system to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. This technology provides excellent durability and low maintenance costs.
Case developed its SCR and CEGR technologies to ensure that customers continue to receive the productivity they expect from their Case equipment while complying with Tier 4 interim and Tier 4 final standards.

Case Loader/Backhoe Performs in Blizzard Conditions
Bruce Rozycki’s crew installed a gas main in a hurry to service 135 homes in a new subdivision in Ottawa, Ontario, while overcoming 10 feet of frost, 22-degree-below-zero temperatures (Fahrenheit) and three days of blinding snowstorms.
Rozycki is the eastern Ontario operations manager for Enbridge Gas Distribution, a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc., the Calgary-based energy company.
The installation had been planned for warmer weather, but delays in obtaining permits held up the project. Once the permits were issued, Enbridge had only five days to install the gas main during nearly impossible winter conditions.

Making fast work of frozen dirt
Frost, combined with hard rock conditions, made the winter trenching project feel like digging through concrete, according to Rozycki. With the frozen ground, his crew wasn’t able to use a directional drill. Instead, they hammered the frozen dirt with a frost breaker mounted on an excavator.

The resulting trench was 2,625 feet long, 3 feet deep and 2 feet wide. The crew installed a 4-inch diameter polyethylene gas main.
To dig and backfill the trench, Enbridge brought in a new addition to its fleet of 16 Case loader/backhoes, the 108-hp Case 590 Super M, which has a dig depth of 15 feet, 11 inches. “The 590 gave us the extra power and maneuverability we needed for working in a blinding snowstorm. The machine didn’t miss a beat,” said Rozycki.
The crew also used the Case 590 to dig the tie-in holes needed to bring the gas lines to the homes.
“Our operators and mechanics prefer Case equipment for its performance, productivity and reliability,” said Rozycki. “Our new 590 is no exception.”

Rozycki reported that his operators love the way the pilot controls on the new machine reduce repetitive motion strain. “The controls are within easy reach, and visibility out of the cab is excellent. But in this situation, there wasn’t much to look at except the blinding snow,” he said.
With the temperatures so cold, Rozycki was impressed with the heat in the cab. “Most of the time, the operator worked in his shirt sleeves,” he said.
Enbridge’s new Case 590 Super M Series 3 loader/backhoe is equipped with four-wheel drive, an Extendahoe, a quick coupler and a 4-in-1 front bucket. “The 4-in-1 is great for cleanup on lawns or the roadway. For us, it’s important to clean up without leaving a mess,” said Rozycki.
The Case loader backhoe made it possible for the new homeowners to move in to the new subdivision. “As cold as it was, we were glad to make it possible for the homeowners to heat their homes with natural gas and move in without any further delay,” Rozycki said.

The facility, which began operations in January, serves more than 140 New Holland, Case IH and Case Construction equipment dealerships in the Pacific Northwest. When fully staffed it will create 35 to 40 new jobs to the Portland area, and carry approximately $17 million in inventory, according to Anu Goel, vice president, North American Parts Operations for CNH Parts & Service. CNH committed $15 million to build out, equip and make infrastructure additions required for future expansion at the site.

“We’re excited. We want our dealers and the end users of New Holland, Case IH and Case Construction equipment to have the best order-to-delivery service in our industry,” said Goel. “The addition of our new Portland facility enhances both our Daily Stock Order (“DSO”) service and next day emergency order service capabilities.”

The center is equipped with the newest, most efficient handling, tracking and shipping technology. “Leading edge technology is required,” states Keith Shadrick, senior director, Depot Operations. “We stock more than 50,000 part numbers at this center alone, and more than 600,000 nationwide. When a dealer needs a part to keep a customer running, we need to be able to turn that order around immediately.”

Stewardship considerations were factors in the development as well, and the new Portland Parts Distribution Center building shell and core achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating. LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

Keeping dealers and the Distribution Center stocked was a major factor in the selection of the facility’s location, Shadrick notes. “Whether by boat, truck or plane, it’s about efficient movement of parts. We’re ideally located to service the Pacific Northwest as we are two and one-half miles from the Portland International Airport and 14 miles from the port. Portland becomes the tenth and newest parts distribution center for CNH.”

“We’re pleased with the choice of Portland and the development we have completed,” Goel says, “and we’re sure our dealers and their customers are going to appreciate the further improvements in parts and service support we’re going to be able to provide.”
